Hardened journals on single-shaft shredders

At this year's Ligna+ 2005, WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH, Ilsfeld, manufacturers of shredding machines and briquetting presses will be exhibiting their latest developments in single-shaft shredders of the WL series (fig. 1) that are fitted with rotors with screw-mounted drive-side shaft journals (fig. 2). This screw connection allows the journals to be hardened beforehand. The resulting improvement in hardness increases the torsional and flexural stress limits of the shaft journal and, consequently, largely avoids any occurrences of wear or damage.

Machines of the WL series are used for shredding all types of wood materials such as chipboard, MDF, solid timber and even extremely hard types of wood. Newly developed knife geometries ("SuperCut") allow an even better and faster cut which results in lower power consumption and a greater output.
The size of the machine depends largely on the type of material to be shredded and its input size as well as the required operating capacity. The design series is available with electromechanical or hydraulic drive from 11 kW to 2x75 kW drive output. Rotor diameters are 252, 368, 482 and 600 mm depending on the constructional size. Achievable chip sizes range from 10 - 100 mm according to the screen hole diameter. The rectangular, turnable cutting crowns have a concave shape with an edge length of 30, 40 or 60 mm. Operating capacity ranges from 100 to 5,000 kg per hour depending on the grain size and material.
